Created in 1800, Maison à vendre is one of the greatest successes of French comic opera. Composed by Nicolas Dalayrac to a libretto by Alexandre Duval, this modern comedy recounts the misunderstandings surrounding the sale of a house, an ever-present theme. We leave the world of the Ancien Régime for a world closer to our own, prefiguring modern comedies.
The plot, simple and lively, unfolds in one act: Mme Dorval sells her house, manipulated by an interested neighbor... but other buyers enter the scene, triggering a series of burlesque situations. The music by Dalayrac, one of the most popular composers of his time, shines through. The work was premiered by prestigious singers such as Mme Dugazon and M. Martin, whose name gave rise to the "baryton-Martin" register.
A little gem of humor and humanity, Maison à vendre remains astonishingly modern and deserves to find its way back to today's audiences.
The Concordances Orchestra is led by Norwegian conductor Martin Wåhlberg and features musicians from all over Europe. Based in Auvergne, the structure blends creation and rediscovery of forgotten works.
