In 1650, Alsace was just emerging from the Thirty Years' War. In Strasbourg, still an independent city, the arts were reborn, influenced by Italy. Originally from Haguenau, Philipp Friedrich Böddecker, a virtuoso organist and bassoonist, became choirmaster of the cathedral. In 1651, he published Sacra Partitura, a collection that marked the emergence of a Rhenish Baroque combining Latin psalms and sacred concerts in German.
In 2023, the Double Face ensemble rediscovered his cantata "Noël Natus est Jesus", a fusion of popular tradition and scholarly writing. Convinced of the contemporary significance of this music, the musicians of Ensemble Double Face decided to explore Böddecker's work more widely.
At intermission a wine and cork pairing will be offered by the winemakers and chefs. During this evening, discover the Restaurant Au Boeuf Rouge's proposal paired with a wine from Domaine Pierre Wach.
