The Story
On a trip to Nagasaki, Pinkerton lightly enters into a marriage contract with Butterfly, a geisha. But the union is disapproved by Consul Sharpless as much as by the girl's family. Years go by and Butterfly remains faithful to her American husband, refusing to admit that he could have forgotten her.
Why go see this opera? Two rising stars reunite to embody Puccini's drama, admirably staged by Anthony Minghella: the Lithuanian Asmik Grigorian makes her Met debut as the innocent Butterfly, and Jonathan Tetelman as the cynical Pinkerton.
