For primary school pupils, our cultural mediators take a multifaceted approach to examining different aspects of our heritage, such as ancient iconography, photography, artwork and objects, as well as the vocabulary associated with its techniques.

This guided tour of our permanent exhibition helps pupils understand what heritage stands for and looks at various components, such as archaeological, fortified and intangible heritage.

How does the half-timbered house keep standing? How can the houses be dated? What materials are used to build them?
Fresco painting / Workshop / 1 hr 30 mins
Fresco derives from the Italian al fresco and describes a technique used to make wall paintings, many of which have stood the test of time. How is it done? To begin with, it means getting your hands dirty!
Stained-glass, working with light / Workshop / 1 hr 30 mins
Stained-glass has been a continual source of fascination for its ability to control light! Pupils will find out how stained-glass is made and how techniques have changed over time. They’ll also be able to colour their own piece of glass and put it in its lead frame.

Earth is a natural resource which we have been using since prehistory and which is found throughout the house in different shapes and forms.
Stone cutting / Workshop / 1 hr 30 mins
An introduction to stone cutting, based on Romanesque carvings from the Abbey of Andlau and Renaissance bas-reliefs from the Seigneurie. Pupils will play the role of a stonemason and find out how they did their job.
What is leather? / Workshop / 1 hr 30 mins
An introduction to leatherworking, discovering what happens with the raw material and imitating the craftsman’s techniques.
The castle, a local product / Self-guided visit / 2 hours
If you want to build quickly, build locally! Generally speaking, it took about 4 years to build a castle in Alsace. Walking round the castles of Spesbourg and Haut-Andlau is a great way of finding out and understanding how they were built.
